<text>and the Newsletter came back and gave me the message that the fonts were prepared by another system and would be altered to suit Quark. Things like this are just not good for my nervous system, especially since they usually happen on the last hour of the last day before something is needed. An unannounced smash was introduced at the June meeting entitled System 7.0 Goodies I. This disk was a Dorman Bullard and Mike Bromley brainstorm that was really great. It includes 7.0 Q&A Database, 7.0 Startup Screen, Before You Install (stack) CEToolBox v 1.6, DiskDoubler Expand, DiskTop 4.0.1 update, Extensions MGR 7.0, Finder 7.0 Menus 1.1, Helium 1.0, Just Click, New Features HC 2.1, PrintAid, ResEdit Menus, Suitcase II updated 1.2.10. BMUG donated a carton of them to us for a fund-raiser. If you are a HyperCard buff or simply interested in trying your hand at writing a stack, come take a look. The price is certainly right, $4 for a book with a suggested retail of $18.95. Also on the Best of… book shelf is the The Macintosh Bible, Third Edition, for $20. </text>

<text>Busy we have been and busy we will be!! The orders for the System 7.0 package remain strong and Mike is spending a lot of time stuffing disks into the drives. We have our SE (two drives), an external floppy drive, the AMUG SE with another external floppy all cranking out disks all evening and most weekend hours. We are out running the flood, for now. My hero says he is doing fine with 7.0 but is a bit nervous about the time when 7.1 is released, Arghhhhhhhhhhh! At the June meeting we introduced the first disks composed exclusively of TrueType‚Ñ¢ fonts. TrueType Fonts I included Albatross, Black Forest, Inkabod, Lemiesz and Salter (two in one folder), Mazama, Saint Francis, and Griffin Dingbats. Many of these are available in Type 1 format as well and will probably be included on our next laser font</text>

<text>title. I tried all of these on my Mac II and an aging LaserWriter Plus. My System is 6.05 and I have until this time been using Adobe Fonts and ATM. So I loaded the True Type INIT and the fonts. I have to admit I am still finding little glitches in my font management. My System was not thrilled to have the TT INIT around. For some reason, the Suitcase containing my standard fonts closed and scared the punctuation right out of me. I do all the Best of… disk labels and these use New Century Schoolbook. Imagine my feelings when I opened that file and all the type had been converted to Courier. A Quark file I was preparing for Gary Fields </text>

This section is followed by a Visual Index of all the images in the collection. Everything, including the cover page and credits, is crammed into less than 90 pages.I skimmed through the manual, then went straight to my Mac. I used fills, compounds and straight images. This package is truly useful for all levels of accomplishment, from novice to professional. I would suggest that this package would be an extremely useful addition to anyone’s graphics library. These elements are versatile, easy to use and inspire creativity. I have not seen a review of this package anywhere else, but I will be willing to bet that if MacUser gets a package to review, their rating will be 5 mice.</text>

<text>Designer’s Toolkit from: SpiritVision, Berkana InternationalThis is the third time I have starting writing this review. The first time I took the line that this was all great fun. That is true, but as I worked with the various elements I found that each time I used one idea another would evolve. It began to get a bit more difficult (not the technique) but the ideas and designs kept leading me into new paths. If you have ever worked with importing clip art or PostScript art into a document then a quick scan of the illustrations in the manual is all that is necessary before starting. These design elements can be mixed and matched in a “seemingly infinite variety of combina-tions.” The elements are grouped in related sets and subsets, so a </text>

<text>quick look at the visual index will lead you to tiles, alphabets, and fills that share a common “theme.” Some of the images are designed in color. Transparency and opacity are strate-gically used. An effort was made to allow for output device independence, and the elements look good at 300 dpi as well as high resolution.Although it is a source of some pride among Mac users to avoid reading a manual, I believe that this one is worth the time. It is short, very informative and well written. Mr. Lang gives you an outline of the history of initial caps, a concise definition of terms, “recipes” for ways to use the design elements, and (if you need them) </text>

<text>Unfortunately, while Personel Press is a nice product from Silicon Beach with many handy features, I couldn’t persuade myself to like it. I found the feature set a bit unorthodox in structure, screen refreshing far too slow, and the program too labor intensive when working with documents. I did, however, like the collapsing palettes, the workbook, the great packaging, and the ability to create a simple document quickly with AutoCreate, but not enough to strongly recommend purchasing this product. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give Personel Press a mid-range 6. Personel Press has list price of $299, but can be found at mail order shops for as little as $199 — a bargain compared to some of the big boys. A single click in the zoom-box will collapse a palette to its title bar, another click will restore the palette.Figure 3. Main Tools palette open and collapsed. The Workbook is another nice feature. It is a super-scrapbook within a publication that can hold up to 255 items of text or graphics. This enables you to store frequently used graphics like logos and boilerplate text like titles within an easy to use format. Each workbook is saved with the publication and is very handy when used with frequently printed publications.</text>

<text>Figure 4. Workbook.CONCLUSIONNow some quirks associated with Personel Press. Every time an object is moved, especially graphics, Personel Press must recalculate the boundaries of everything on the page. This recalculation, even on a relatively empty screen takes far too long. Every little shift of the selected object causes a wait of several seconds (very annoying). Graphic objects always seem to lose their format when resized, forcing you to reset the scaling between actual size, scale to fit object, fit proportionally or fit/overfill proportionally.</text>

<text>Once you are done with AutoCreate, you can go into the main publication window and enhance the publication. Objects in Personel Press can be placed, rotated, shadowed, colored, shuffled forward or backward, assigned a position, and generally manipulated in many ways. This enables you to take any of the standard templates and easily turn them into unique publications.FEATURESIn addition to AutoCreate, Personel Press also has some unique floating palettes that offer a variety of tools, patterns, colors, and image control. Once you have used AutoCreate to open a publication template and add text and graphics to the template’s text and graphic objects, Personel Press automatically formats the input to the publication. I am so tired of companies trying to cram hundreds of pages of documentation into a package half the required size or giving us a soft cover manual whose spine breaks the first time you try to spread it flat. Thank you Silicon Beach.THE SETUPPersonel Press isn’t copy protected and requires a Macintosh Plus, SE/30, Portable, or any Macintosh II model with at least 1 MB of memory. You will want a hard drive for easy access to all the template documents or two 800K floppy drives. There is a recommended placement guide on page 1-20 that shows where Personel Press expects to find its files. If you have a two-drive system, there is also a guide that tells you how to set up your disks for the greatest efficiency.Personel Press comes with its own spelling dictionary, hyphenation dictionary, thesaurus, help file, dozens of example files, and several import tools called Plug-Ins. <text>Making Headlines with Style Many software packages over the last few years have been slowing adding page layout capabilities that go far beyond simply putting text on paper. The latest page layout program is Personel Press from Silicon Beach Software. Additionally, Personel Press has many time saving features that enhance the creation of any document, from a simple one page flyer to monthly multi-page newsletters. Some 70 additional pages of documentation, updates, and a small notepad emblazoned with the Personel Press logo completed the package. With everything in the binder it’s a tight fit, but if you store the master disks elsewhere there is plenty of room for the pages to turn nicely. You can only flip things vertically and horizontally, and in 90° angles. But, you can’t have everything. And, for the price, this is a great little program.</text>

If you don’t like a particular pattern, just drag it into the little waste basket at the end of the palette to erase it. This program is by no means a PixelPaint Professional, or a Color Studio or even a Photoshop, but for around $60 (as found in the Mac Magazine ads) you can now (given that you have a Color compatible Mac and a color monitor) use all of those color system palette colors to paint with. The people that put out this software, Baseline Publishing, don’t take themselves too seriously; for instance, their legal disclaimer –“DISCLAIMER –MacCheese is not an edible food product! Say it’s a PC running Windows. If all else fails, tell management that the Apple-IBM alliance means that the purchase order is really for PCs running Windows. By the time they catch on (or up to you), it will be too late. Remember: ask forgiveness, not permission. <text>5. Inspire, don’t compete with MIS. This is probably the most difficult recommendation—I never said it would be easy. You aren’t going to win a frontal assault on MIS. Instead inspire MIS with Macintosh’s strengths. Show MIS how Macintoshes can make them into heros. Be brave—and bite your tongue.6. Let a thousand flowers bloom. Foster the use of Macintosh for any purpose. Don’t dictate how people should use their Macintosh. You never know: they may come up with ways even you didn’t think of. All that counts is that you get the Macintoshes in.7. Localize your efforts. Macintosh is a personal computer. Don’t position Macintosh as the harbinger of a “corporate </text>

<text>The Ten Best Ways to Get a Macintosh Into Your Company1. Get it in the door anyway you can. This is not the time to be proud. If management thinks it’s a desktop publishing machine, agree and get their signature. If management thinks it’s a front-end to an AS/400, agree and get their signature. If management thinks it’s door stop, agree and get their signature.2. Let people play with it. The best way to get allies inside your company is to make people love Macintosh. The best way to do this is to let them touch, play, and use one. The rest is inevitable. Don’t tell people Macintosh is great. Help them discover that Macintosh is great.</text>
<text>3. Highlight strengths, don’t deny weaknesses. Concentrate on explaining the strengths of Macintosh: it’s easy to learn, easy to use, easy to repair, and easy to love. Don’t open a can of worms or waste time trying explain away the (few and MIS-perceived) weaknesses of Macintosh.4. Provide a safe first step. Make it easy for management to say “Yes, you can.” Don’t tell them that you need five IIfxs with 21-inch color monitors. Instead tell them that you only need a Classic and maybe one “Mac II class” machine “for quite a while.” Once you get Macintosh in, you’ll have plenty of other people who will lobby for you.</text>

Tom showed me a few illustrations he had done and they were very impressive. After we investigated the output possibilities, we both came to the same conclusion. This little guy is a big featured program. Unless you are looking for certain special illustration features, such as PostScript, or need a really high end application, take a good look at UltraPaint. The file formats for saving illustrations are MacPaint‚Ñ¢, PICT, Startup Screen, TIFF and UltraPaint. When I checked with Micrographix in Tempe, they indicated that output would present no problems.
